Privacy Policy
🏷️ Nametags has no accounts, no ads, and no tracking. Your crew's game (names, notes, and any photos) is stored while you play and deleted automatically about 36 hours after the game goes quiet. Your phone keeps its own copy of the final results for the next-morning Debrief, for up to 7 days.
1. About This Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Andrew Maxwell ("we," "us," or "our") handles information in the Nametags iOS app. Nametags is a party game for adults (18 or older and of legal drinking age where you play): friends form a crew, get quests that involve meeting new people when they go out, and log who they met.
2. What the App Stores
To let everyone in your crew play together live, each game is stored in Google Firebase Realtime Database. A game contains:
| Data | What it is |
|---|---|
| Your display name | The name you type on your name tag. |
| Game activity | Your quests, claims, scores, BS calls, votes, and the crew's activity feed, with times. |
| People you log | The first name you enter for someone you met, plus an optional short note to remember them (like "Giants hat") and an optional line about how it came up. |
| Lock-in answers | For some quests you lock in answers first (for example, your hometown or favorite movies). |
| Photo proof (optional) | If you choose to add one, a photo you take or pick from your library, compressed to a small size. |
| Tonight's settings | The crew name, city, mode, and length of the night. With Pro, also: occasion packs, the guest of honor's first name if you add one (for example, whose birthday it is), quests your crew writes, team names and who's on which team, bar names you enter for Bar Crawl stops, and the crew emblem and name tag colors. |
| First-night flag | Whether it's a player's first time playing Nametags (yes or no), so the host can earn referral credit. It's based on the phone's own history, not on who you are. |
| Notification token (optional) | If you allow notifications, an Apple push token so the app can alert you when bounties drop. It isn't linked to your identity. |
| Debrief copy (on your phone) | When a night ends, your phone saves the final results and photos so you can open the Debrief the next morning. It stays on your phone and is deleted after 7 days. |
| Random player ID | A random ID the app creates on your phone to tell players apart. It isn't tied to your Apple ID, phone number, or device identifiers. |
Some things are saved only on your phone and never uploaded: your settings (your name, last city, and a list of games you played, used to clean them up), your season standings (a summary of each finished night: crew name, first names, points, wins, and how many people each person met), your referral count, and any unused Day Passes. Deleting the app removes them.
Purchases
Nametags Pro and Day Passes are sold by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles payment, and we never see your name, Apple ID, or payment details. The app checks your purchase with Apple on your phone to unlock Pro, and marks your crew's game as Pro so your friends get it too. We don't run our own purchase servers.
3. Who Can See It
- Your crew. Everyone in the game sees names, claims, scores, the people logged, notes, and photos. That's how the game works.
- Anyone with your crew's invite link. A game can be opened by anyone who has its link, so share it only with your friends.
- People nearby running Nametags. While a crew is open, your phone broadcasts the crew name and host's name over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi so friends standing nearby can join with one tap. Anyone nearby with the app can see and join an open crew.
We don't look through games, and we never use their contents for anything except running the game.
4. People You Meet
Nametags only asks for a first name and an optional note. Please be respectful of the people you meet:
- Don't enter last names, phone numbers, social media handles, or anything someone would consider private or sensitive.
- Only take or add a photo of someone with their permission.
- If someone asks you not to include them, don't.
If you believe information about you was entered in a Nametags game, email us and we'll delete it.
5. What We Don't Collect
- No accounts, emails, or phone numbers
- No location or GPS data
- No contacts
- No analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and no tracking across other apps or websites
- No payment information (purchases are handled entirely by Apple)
6. Permissions
- Local network: to find friends' crews nearby.
- Notifications (optional): for bounty and last-call alerts, and the next-morning Debrief. These are scheduled on your phone.
- Camera and photos (optional): only when you choose to add photo proof.
You can change these at any time in iOS Settings → Nametags.
7. Retention and Deletion
- A game, including everyone's names, the people logged, notes, answers, photos, and notification tokens, is deleted automatically once it has been inactive for 36 hours (long enough for the whole crew to open the next-morning Debrief). Our server deletes it automatically.
- Want it gone sooner, or never reopening the app? Email andrewgmaxwell123@gmail.com with your crew name and roughly when you played, and we'll delete it.
- Your phone's Debrief copy is deleted after 7 days. Deleting the app removes everything stored on your phone right away.
We don't keep backups or archives of games.
8. Service Providers
We do not sell or rent information, and we do not share it for advertising. We use:
- Google Firebase (Realtime Database and Hosting): stores games and serves invite links, in the United States, under Google's Privacy Policy. All data is sent over encrypted (HTTPS/TLS) connections.
- Apple: delivers notifications if you allow them, nearby discovery through iOS, and processes App Store purchases under Apple's Privacy Policy.
We may disclose information if required by law.
9. Age Requirement
Nametags is only for people who are 18 or older and of legal drinking age where you play (for example, 21 in the United States, 18 or 19 in Canada, and 18 in most of Europe). It is not directed to minors, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone underage has used the app, contact us and we will delete their data.
10. Your Rights
Depending on where you live (for example, California or the European Union), you may have the right to know what information we hold about you, to get a copy, to correct it, or to have it deleted. Email us to make a request. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights. We do not sell or "share" personal information as those terms are defined under California law.
11. Security
We use reasonable safeguards, including encrypted connections and database rules that block anyone from browsing or listing games. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
12. Changes to This Policy
When we make material changes, we'll update the Effective Date above.
